SA Government’s Response > Department of Environmental Affairs to host Provin

Ms Edna Molewa, the Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs will be in attendance at the North West Climate Change Summit on Thursday, 01 September 2011. The Summit is scheduled to take place at the Rustenburg Civic Centre.

The Summit starts today, 31 August and will end on 02 September 2011.

The Climate Change Summit is one in a series of Summits planned across the country. The Department of Environmental Affairs, in collaboration with various provincial governments, is hosting provincial climate change summits from today, 31 August to 07 October 2011. The purpose of these summits is to educate, inform, engage and raise awareness about climate change to the general public.

The Summits come as South Africa prepares to host and participate in the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Durban later this year.

As Head of the South African Delegation for COP17, Edna Molewa, Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs is entrusted with the responsibility of leading the South African delegation in pursuing the country’s interest at the UNFCCC, COP 17/CMP 7 negotiations.

The Summits comprise part of the Public Climate Change Outreach and Mobilisation Programme which is one of the Department’s key priorities in the build up to COP17.
